In dealing with Carlsbad luxury real estate for many years, I have gotten to know the people with whom I share this great area.  Many of us, during the holidays or other special times of year, like the thought of getting out of town for a few days.  Hard to believe, right?  Yes, I love Vista CA real estate and the entire coastal area of Carlsbad; but it never hurts to visit friends and family or just head to another region now and then.  It makes you appreciate what you’ve got!

Before traveling from Vista CA real estate, it’s important to know the best ways to ensure a safe journey.  Here, I’ll offer up six very common tips so when you head away from home; you know all will be well.
1.    Don’t advertise!  This tip should begin before you ever leave home.  We live in times where people like to stay connected using social media; but you should never post that you’re leaving town on such sites.  Perhaps it’s unlikely that bad guys are really watching your profile.  However, I have to say I wouldn’t want to leave my Carlsbad luxury real estate a target!

2.    Book rooms wisely.  When booking hotel rooms, especially at roadside hotels, the safest place to stay is in an upstairs room.  While this is less convenient in terms of loading and unloading baggage, an upstairs room keeps you away from an open parking lot and also gives you the opportunity to scan the lot before leaving.

3.    Look like you know where you’re going.  Never carry your map with you when walking through an unknown city.  If you need to ask directions, do so inside of a place of business rather than asking someone on the street where to go.

4.    Check your hotels refund policy.  It’s probably that you will book your hotel reservations before ever heading away from home.  However, sometimes plans change and you’re forced to find a place to stay on the fly.  In such instances, be wary of hotels which post “No Refunds for Early Checkout”.  Travel experts claim that more often than not, such a policy goes hand in hand with some unsavory condition.  Better to keep looking, or at least ask to see the room before willingly accepting such a policy.

5.    Consider truck stops.  Should you find the need to stop for some much needed rest, it may help to know that truck stops are some of the safest places to go.  Not the rest stops located off highways, truck stops specifically for big-rigs.  Such areas typically have 24-hour security and drivers who are accustomed to staying aware of immediate surroundings.  The drawback:  noise!

6.    Get local information through conversation.  When visiting a new area, read the local papers and also chat with the locals as you dine or stroll the town.  This way, you can stay abreast of any important advisories and enjoy a safer, more well-rounded trip.  You might even find a fascinating locals-only place to visit!

After your stroll through Cannery Village, your trek will continue in Costa Mesa, just seven miles away. In Costa Mesa, you can spend the rest of your day strolling South Coast Plaza.  This upscale shopping destination provides ample window shopping as well as several dining experiences.  Without a doubt, you can stay busy here for the remainder of Day 2.

Day 3, the last day of your fun Southern California road trip, will move you closer to home with a jaunt through Temecula Wine Country.  It has been said in recent years that the wines coming out of Temecula rival those Napa has become famous for, so this part of your trip could be an eye-opening experience!  The drive to wine country alone is fabulous; full of rolling hillsides lined with grape vines.  Choosing where to stop for a bit of wine tasting is the most difficult thing you will face on Day 3.  Wilson Creek Winery is known for their fun tasting room and their one-of-a-kind Almond Champagne, while South Coast Winery includes a famously decadent restaurant with amazing patio seating.

Today I want to focus on a serene mountain getaway located less than an hour from Carlsbad beach real estate.  The small rural town of Julian is essentially across the entire county from this starting point; but can be reached very quickly and offers something for the whole family. I’ve been here with small children, and also with that special someone and had a great time without fail.  Here are just a few of the high points there are to Julian.

The town of Julian is famous for their apples, and no trip is complete without a stop to Julian Pie Company!  This family-owned business has been serving up pie and spiced ciders for decades and simply can’t be beat.  For a more comprehensive dining experience, stop by Mom’s Bakery.  Here, you can watch pie-makers craft crusts and fillings while you warm up with a steaming cup of soup.

One of the most popular activities for families is to spend a few hours picking apples at one of the local apple orchards.  Kids of all ages get into choosing the perfect fruit to take home.   At “Apples and Art Orchard”, you do more than just wander through rows and rows of trees; here, the owner gives you a talk all about apples, including how to pick them. Once you’ve been amply informed about this powerful fruit, you can head out into the fields with your handy apple picker and fill your bag!

For tea lovers, a visit to Julian Tea and Cottage Arts is a must.  In this charming turn-of-the-century home, tea is served daily along with finger sandwiches and scones with whipped cream.  To satisfy your sweet tooth, you might try one of their various desserts or come away with a jar of homemade jam to enjoy at home.

Although Julian is not a destination for skiing, many locals flock to the mountain during times when snow levels drop to lower elevations.  Come by at such a time and you’ll see folks parked on the side of the road, busily building snowmen or throwing snowballs playfully.  Because Julian is less than an hour from Cardiff-by-the-Sea real estate, or any other coastal location, I view it as the ideal place to visit for a change of pace.

The subject of personal safety is an important one.  By facing the fact that no area is immune to home invasion or other hazard, you build a higher sense of awareness and overall personal safety.  You shouldn’t walk around your Oceanside real estate feeling afraid that home invasion is inevitable – that’s not what I’m saying.  What I’m saying is that it doesn’t matter where you live; taking certain measures to protect your valuables and your person is wise.  Let’s look at a couple of really simple ways to make sure your home is never a target.

It seems obvious, but light is the enemy of bad guys.  When your home is well lit, it instantly becomes a safer place.  What I’ve heard time and time again from safety experts is that special security lighting is ideal for use on a home’s exterior.  If your home has a driveway, a side gate, or any dark areas in the front or the rear of the property, add lighting!  For very little investment, you can find security lighting and have it professionally installed.  Motion sensor lights are ideal; and you may be able to find solar powered types so you never have to remember to turn these important fixtures on.

How, or if, you answer your door to visitors is another very important safety habit.  Many people feel so comfortable in their homes that they willingly open doors without even looking to see who’s on the other side; a big mistake even if you have a door chain that makes you feel safely tucked away from harm.  The first thing that you can do at the door to improve safety is install a specialized peephole that gives you a better view of the outside world.  Some peepholes today are actual camera screens that run on batteries.

If you’re not into the tech toys, you may prefer a fisheye peephole.  This type looks very similar to your standard peephole, but offers a panoramic 220-degree view of the outside.  With a fisheye peephole, you may be able to see not only who is directly at the door but also anyone who may be standing off to the side or down at the street.  What’s great about the fisheye peephole is that the person outside the door sees only vague light images should they look in from the outside.

Why are these specialized peepholes so special?  Because they keep you from having to fully approach your front door when an unexpected visitor arrives. Staying farther away from the front door is safer should the visitor try to kick at the door.

1. Disneyland

Let’s just start with the place of true magic all year round.  Through the years, Disneyland theme park has become an oasis of fun for the whole family.  This isn’t a place only for out-of-towners to frolic during family vacations; it is a place where we locals like to escape to every once in awhile. During the holiday season, the park transforms into a winter wonderland that includes a winter fireworks show and awe inspiring holiday parade of lights.  Everywhere you turn in Disneyland during the winter months, you’ll be treated to incredible light displays and festive music.  At the Haunted Mansion, you can take in a “Nightmare before Christmas” feel before sitting with a warm cup of cocoa to enjoy the nightly firework display.

1. Big Bear Mountain

Of course, winter is not complete without a little snow play, and Big Bear is just the place to get it.  On the mountain, you’ll find two resorts: Snow Summit and Bear Mountain.  Either provides great fun for skiers and snow-boarders.  For those who are more interested in tubing, Alpine Slide is the place to go.  While you can find places to pull over and take in some roadside sledding, those places are becoming more few and far between so to make sure you get in on the action, it’s best to head straight to one of the local designated spots.  After a day on the slopes, Big Bear Village is the place to go for some relaxing window shopping or even a romantic dinner.

How else do you celebrate the holidays on the coast that with a parade of amply decorated yachts, kayaks and sail or power boats?  This San Diego tradition has grown to attract more than 80,000 people as the parade flows through San Diego’s waterfront each year.   After the parade, attendees are treated to a holiday fireworks display.  The event is free; but parking can be an issue so it’s recommended to show up early with plenty of blankets, snacks and warm cocoa or cider!
